Maryland 2026 - Maryland transportation officials reaffirmed that rebuilding the Francis Scott Key Bridge will cost approximately $5.2 billion, rejecting reports that the project could reach $9 billion despite ending negotiations with lead contractor Kiewit over what the state called an unacceptably high bid. Officials said the estimate is based on independent analyses and federal review, and they plan to move forward by dividing the project into four separate contracts while maintaining a target completion date of 2030.
Covering costs: The state expects the full cost of the rebuild to be covered through federal funding, insurance proceeds and legal settlements, including a recent $2.25 billion agreement with the owner and operator of the Dali cargo ship.
