Strathmore and Bandhouse Gigs Present TRIBUTE TO SIMON & GARFUNKEL AND PAUL SIMON. Strathmore and Bandhouse Gigs will convene 60 of the Washington, D.C.-area’s most recognized musicians to celebrate a dynamic songwriting and performing career that has spanned more than five decades with Tribute to Simon & Garfunkel and Paul Simon on Thursday, August 25, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in the Music Center. The concert is a compilation of Paul Simon’s most popular singles, ageless hits and enduring lyrics as a solo artist as well as with the folk duo Simon & Garfunkel. Strathmore’s annual tribute concert has become an anticipated tradition highlighting icons of popular music, and is an extension of the art center’s commitment to support local musicians. Simon’s distinguished career began when he started performing with schoolmate Art Garfunkel, scoring their first hit under the name Tom & Jerry in the winter of 1957-58 with “Hey Schoolgirl.” They debuted as the formidable Simon & Garfunkel in 1965. Simon has been the recipient of 12 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award and three albums of the year with “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “Still Crazy After All These Years” and “Graceland.” The Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee has also been honored with the Songwriters Hall of Fame Johnny Mercer Award, Time Magazine's “100 People Who Shape Our World” and the first annual Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. Simon’s song “Mrs. Robinson” from the motion picture The Graduate was named in the top 10 of The American Film Institute's 100 Years…100 Songs. He also experimented with songwriting styles; his 1986 album, Graceland, brought worldwide attention to the music of South Africa and the country’s people. The follow up The Rhythm of the Saints album incorporated Brazilian influences.
Tribute to Simon & Garfunkel and Paul Simon will feature notable local musicians from a variety of genres including Eric Brace, Deanna Bogart, Chopteeth Afro-Funk Big Band, LEA, Ed O’Connell, Julia Nixon, Deep River and former Strathmore Artists in Residence Margot MacDonald, The Sweater Set, Luke Brindley, Victoria Vox and Ted Garber performing faithful renditions of songs sure to resonate with fans and casual listeners alike. Audience members will hear unmistakably familiar hits such as “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes,” “Ms. Robinson,” “You Can Call Me Al,” “Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” that follow the trajectory of this treasured songwriter.
