Professor Craig Whitaker
Annapolis, MD - Congratulations to Professor Craig Whitaker on being named the 2024 recipient of the Class of 1951 Civilian Faculty Teaching Excellence Award in honor of Professor Theodore J. Benac, and CDR Lindsay Cathro, our 2024 recipient of the Class of 1951 Military Faculty Teaching Excellence Award and the William P. Clements Award.
Professor Whitaker is a dedicated teacher who strives to make a positive impact on students. His exceptional interactions with the students inside and outside the classroom allow Professor Whitaker to have an effect on students beyond their years at the Naval Academy. He has developed a reputation as a humorous, caring instructor who works diligently to connect with students and foster their growth in problem-solving and communication skills. He has mentored 49 different year-long Independent research students plus 3 Trident Scholars. The midshipmen have been co-authors on peer-reviewed papers, presented research at regional/national American Chemical Society conferences and one won the Silver Star in Iraq for bravery. Professor Whitaker is especially noted for having an excellent rapport with his students and this combined with his flair for unusual classroom/real-world connections makes him a sought-after instructor by midshipmen of all learning levels.

CDR Lindsay Cathro
CDR Cathro, a rotational Reservist in the Mathematics Department, has been selected as the recipient of the Military Faculty Teaching Excellence and William P. Clements Award. CDR Cathro has a B.S. in Economics and an M.S in Secondary Education with an Emphasis in Mathematics. A 2007 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, CDR Cathro teaches the core Calculus classes, where she continually receives praise for her engaging and welcoming classroom environment. In addition to her teaching duties, CDR Cathro has served as the Yard-wide Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) Manager where she successfully raised nearly $63,000. Additionally, she served as the Yard-wide Officer in Charge of Capstone Day in 2023 where she meticulously and tirelessly oversaw the largest and most successful Capstone Day to date. She is dedicated to mentoring midshipmen and watching them develop morally, mentally and physically!
