GLEN BURNIE, MD.— University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC) has once again been recognized as one of the top hospitals in Maryland and the Baltimore Metro Area in the 2026-2027 U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” rankings.
UM BWMC ranked #5 in the state for the third year in a row and remains the #1 hospital in Anne Arundel County this year, reflecting continued excellence in quality care, innovation, discovery and patient safety. As a member organization of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), UM BWMC consistently seeks to transform the care it provides to better meet the needs of the communities it services. UM BWMC is one of three UMMS hospitals ranking among the top five hospitals in the state, according to U.S. News & World Report. The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), the System's academic flagship hospital, ranked #3 in both the state of Maryland and Baltimore Metro area, and ranked #35 nationally for its cancer services through the UM Greenebaum Comprehensive Care Center. UM St. Joseph Medical Center ranked #2 in the state and Baltimore Metro area.
Altogether, UMMS earned “High Performing” ratings in 20 adult procedures and conditions – 9 of which were received by UM BWMC for abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery, diabetes, heart failure, kidney failure, pacemaker implantation and pneumonia.
The U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” rankings evaluate hospitals across the country based on factors such as patient outcome and quality of care provided. The annual rankings are designed to help patients and their providers make informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions and common procedures. More than 50 hospitals in Maryland were evaluated by U.S. News & World Report for their annual list, with only seven meeting the high standards set by the third-party rating organization.
