Professor Sharika Crawford
Annapolis, MD - Congratulations to Professor Sharika Crawford, U.S. Naval Academy's 2022 recipient of the “Class of 1951 Civilian Faculty Excellence in Research Award.” Professor Crawford is a historian of Latin America and the Caribbean in USNA's History Department. The majority of her scholarship focuses on English-speaking, African-descended populations in interstitial places that do not fit neatly into state constructions of national identity but reveal much about broader historical processes such as migration, state formation, and environmental change.
Her recent book “The Last Turtlemen of the Caribbean: Waterscapes of Labor, Conservation, and Boundary Making” (UNC Press 2020) became a conduit to examine disputes over territorial sovereignty and human effects on ecological change in the Greater Caribbean. This book received an honorable mention from the 2021 Elsa Goveia Book Prize for Excellence in Caribbean History out of 42 books for consideration. She has also published nine refereed articles, chapters, and essays in the past five years. More recently, she has enjoyed collaborating on projects with multidisciplinary teams.
Several prestigious grants and fellowships have supported her research, including national awards from NEH, the Fulbright Program, and the American Philosophical Society. As an active scholar in her field of Latin American and Caribbean history, she has repeatedly reviewed manuscripts for publications and served on editorial boards, grant review panels, and national conference program committees.
