Saturday, January 17 and Sunday, January 18: Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.
11 a.m. in the Visitor Center
Join Park Rangers with a reading of Martin’s Big Words written by Doreen Rappaport and illustrated by Bryan Collier at 11 a.m. in the Visitor Center library. Following the reading, all are welcome to write and decorate letters to lonely and isolated seniors. Letter writing will be available all day with all supplies provided.
Saturday, January 24: Traveling Exhibit: Civil War-Era African-American History in the US/Mexico Borderlands
10 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the Visitor Center
Join Maryland Department of Natural Resources for a unique opportunity to explore a traveling exhibit for one day only! Discover the rich history of African Americans along the US/Mexico border during the Civil War era. This remarkable exhibit has been designed, developed, and produced by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s CHAPS (Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools) Program in Edinburg, Texas.
Enjoy a featured presentation at 1 p.m. by Roseann Bacha-Garza, professor and Projects Director of the CHAPS Program at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
This program is presented in collaboration with our partners at the Harriet Tubman Museum and Education Center.

Saturday, February 14: Black History in Maryland State Parks: Past, Present, and Future.

Join the Maryland Park Service Director Angela Crenshaw for this special presentation on Black History within the Maryland State Parks. Outdoor recreation is for everyone, but that has not always been the case. Learn about the history of exclusion in our public lands and how the Maryland Park Service is moving to make our parks more inclusive places.
Ranger Crenshaw is the Director of the Maryland Park Service, which manages more than 90 properties (including parks, battlefields, rail trails, natural resources management areas, natural environment areas, and state historical parks) with 259 employees managing more than 142,000 preserved acres, 1,153 miles of trails, and 2,200 campsites.
In 2024, Crenshaw received the Department of Natural Resources Leader of the Year Award and the Harriet Tubman Lifetime Achievement Award from the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture.
