Music of "Ancient and Honorable Tuesday Club of Annapolis"
April 22nd, 7 p.m.; Virtual Lecture
Annapolis wasn’t necessarily the most exciting place culturally in the middle of the 18th century, so a group of mostly Scottish immigrants decided to make things happen. They formed a gentlemen’s club, held bi-monthly meetings for over ten years, and left us with a rich and often comical account of their goings-on. Music (and also rum punch, of course) was central to these gatherings at private homes and taverns such as Middleton’s, and the ministers, merchants, doctors and other club members and guests often composed their own for their gatherings. Join Dr. David Hildebrand as he discusses, sings, plays and cues up images and recordings of Tuesday Club music — you’ll marvel at the silliness that survives down the centuries (and you may also learn David Hildebrand a bit about what was heard in town at this time at the dancing rooms, theater, out in the tobacco fields, and at St. Anne’s Church)!
