
Women in the Arts: A Dialogue Between Nature & Environment

Maryland Hall is proud to announce the duet art show ‘Women in the Arts: A Dialogue Between Nature & Environment’ featuring the work of First Lady Yumi Hogan and Greek artist Mina Papatheodorou-Valyraki. Taking place in the adjacent Chaney & Martino Galleries at Maryland Hall in the Annapolis Arts District of Annapolis, Maryland, the opening reception will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on April 28, 2022. The full exhibit will run from April 19 - June 24, 2022. The vision of this exhibition began to take shape in the winter of 2017 when they expressed their shared interest in nature and the environment through their art. The result is their second exhibit together featuring upward of 40 pieces of artwork at Maryland Hall.

With an intimate setting of candlelit tables, the Friday Night Jazz Club, featuring some of the Mid-Atlantic region’s most seasoned artists, the series continues on April 29 at Easton’s historic Waterfowl Building and concludes on May 27. Performances begin at 7 p.m. and are presented by Jazz Alive, a charitable foundation based in Talbot County. The April 29 performance features three giants of the DC area jazz scene: saxophonist Bruce Swaim, guitarist Steve Abshire and bassist Paul Langosch. Swaim has earned two Wammy Awards for Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year from the Washington Area Music Association and has worked with such notables as Keter Betts, Carl Allen, Danny Gatton and Rosemary Clooney. Jazz Alive concertgoers will recognize Abshire and Langosch from their stellar performances during last year’s summer concert series— Abshire as part of the Great Guitars and Langosch as part of the trio with harmonica player Hendrik Meurkens and guitarist Paul Bollenback.
BSO Presents Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 3
April 29th, 8 - 10 p.m.; Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, Baltimore
Called “one of the most insightful violinists of his generation” by The Boston Globe, Stefan Jackiw performs a new violin concerto written expressly for him by noted pianist and composer Conrad Tao. Also on the program, Ukrainian conductor Kirill Karabits interprets two contrasting symphonies. Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements was written shortly after he moved to the U.S. and draws inspiration from World War II. Rachmaninoff's poignant Third Symphony was written in exile in America and reflects his memories of the old Russia.

End Slavery, Bring Freedom, and Restore Dignity with the Dash4Dignity 5K run and 1K Freedom Walk for human trafficking survivors. All proceeds from this event will support organizations committed to ending slavery and restoring dignity to survivors.

Walk for the Woods is a day of guided hikes and educational activities at the beautiful, permanently protected Bacon Ridge Natural Area in Crownsville. Expert-led guided hikes will include bird watching, amphibian searches, naturalist hikes, and more! Attendees are also invited to explore the permanently protected Bacon Ridge Natural Area’s 1000+ acres of woodlands, wetlands, streams, and meadows on their own. Access to the event is via Farm Road (not usually open to the public). A self-led hike option will also be offered, complete with trail maps and educational signage posted along the trails.

67th Annual May Basket Competition
May 1st, 11 a.m.; Downtown Annapolis
The 67th annual May basket competition, sponsored by the Garden Club of Old Annapolis Towne, will be held Sunday, May 1 in celebration of May Day. Residents and merchants in the Historic District, and parts of Murray Hill, are encouraged to arrange baskets of fresh cut flowers to display outside their homes and businesses. Residential arrangements must be in baskets and include a card indicating the name of the participant; merchants can use a container that reflects an element of their business. Children are encouraged to make baskets and are judged in a special category. Please attach a card with the child’s name and age to their basket. All displays must be out by 11:00 a.m. on May 1 for judging by garden club members. Adult blue ribbon winners will receive an invitation to a special May Day tea on Tuesday, May 3.
