State of the Rivers: Chester and Sassafras
May 4th, 5:30-7 p.m.; Kent County Community Center, Worton
ShoreRivers is pleased to announce the return of its highly anticipated State of the Rivers events—a series of free presentations held each spring to inform public about the current state of our Eastern Shore waterways. Each year, between April—October, ShoreRivers’ professional Riverkeepers conduct weekly tidal sampling of more than 60 sites from Cecilton to Cambridge, then test for multiple scientific water quality parameters including dissolved oxygen, nutrient pollution, algae, and clarity. These indicators reveal the overall health of our waterways and our progress toward protecting and restoring our local rivers. ShoreRivers, statewide groups, and national agencies use this information to track trends, develop remediation strategies, advocate for stronger laws and enforcement, alert the public of potential health risks, and inform region-wide efforts toward clean water goals.

Talisman Therapeutic Riding has been celebrating legacy of horses through its annual Derby Day Event. This year, Talisman is elevating the event with a cocktail party on Friday, May 5, to commemorate the Oaks. The Oaks is all about the ladies. It is known for an exciting race day, but equally unabashed celebration of all things pink, fashion, and its commitment to raising awareness for the fight against breast cancer. The Derby is known as the Run for the Roses, but the official flower of the Oaks is the Lily. Just like the Derby has its official drink (the Mint Julep), the Oaks has The Lily! Join us toasting our fillies, with a Lily!

Annapolis Symphony Orchestra: Saint-Saens Organ Symphony

Korngold’s Violin Concerto is the late work of a prodigy that defies any suggestion that its composer lost his flair once his brilliant childhood was past. Part of the rich Viennese tradition, Korngold, famous for elevating the Hollywood film score to a high art, expected great artists to be endowed with a complete command of their technical resources and richly expressive. Grammy-winning violinist James Ehnes is sure to meet these expectations. Wagner famously espoused that after Beethoven’s Ninth the symphonic form could not be bettered. Camille Saint-Saëns with his Third Symphony said not so fast. His “somber and agitated” first movement and tranquil adagio leave you unprepared for the thundering finale announced by the organ roaring to a grand and glorious conclusion.

22nd Annual Multicultural Festival

The Multicultural Festival will be on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Easton’s Idlewild Park. The rain venue is Easton Middle School. Founded in 2000 by Talbot County Peace Education and Community Effort (P.E.A.C.E.), the Multicultural Festival celebrates the many distinct heritages of the Mid-Shore, some dating back several generations, others arriving more recently to call this area their home.

Celebrating more than 340 years of transforming wheat into flour using 140-year old grindstones at Old Wye Mill. There will be corn grinding demonstrations and children's activities. Purchase stone ground wheat flour, Einkorn flour, cornmeal, grits, and more in the gift shop. Friends of Wye Mill, Inc. has announced its “Spring Fling” celebration and bake sale will be held Saturday, May 6 at the Wye Grist Mill and Museum in Wye Mills, Maryland. Festivities on this first grinding day of 2023 will continue throughout the day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The mill will celebrate its 341st year of operation using water power and 140-year old stones to grind corn into meal that festival goers can purchase for their next batch of muffins and pancakes. Other types of stone-ground artisanal flour (Einkorn and buckwheat), corn meal, and grits, as well as pottery, local jams, jellies, maple syrup, and mill memorabilia are also available for purchase. A raffle ticket for a basket of goodies will be given for each purchase of $5 or more. At 11 a.m. there will be a dedication ceremony for the new door in honor of Mr. James Casey, long-time miller and volunteer who spent more than 35 years helping to show visitors how things were done in the old days.

Fairy House Festival and Tea Party

Quiet Waters Park and the Friends of Quiet Waters Park Sculpture Program present a Fairy House Festival May 6 - 30, 2023. The Festival will open on May 6th at 2pm with a Fairy Tea Party, featuring Katherine Haas our local master story teller. Costumes are welcome! Original, hand-made Fairy Houses will appear along the Holly Trail from May 6 - 30.
