September 17th; MD Corn Maze, Gambrills
People have been getting lost in our 8 acres since 2006. If you are new to 'corn mazing'... The object is to negotiate your way (on foot) through the design we've cut into the corn. The corn is taller than you... so it's fun and challenging to explore your way through the paths. We always make sure to have destinations for you to find in the maze. If you find them in the right order.. they often help you find your way out! Either way... they definitely add to the fun! You may carry a flag to raise up towards our tower lookout in case you need help finding your way out. Our maze is cut to include two routes, so those who would like a less challenging version... have no fear... we can point you in the right direction. The Maryland Corn Maze has become a Fall Festival Family tradition for many here in Gambrills... come on in and get lost... I bet it will soon be yours!
30th Annual Native American Festival
September 17th through 18th; Ball Field, Vienna
This group of about 300 people are descendants of the original Nanticoke Indians, whose home was, and still is the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Their name, Nause-Waiwash (nah-soo WAY-wash), is a reference to two Nanticoke ancestral villages; one having been located along the Choptank River outside of Cambridge, MD and the other having been located outside Vienna, MD along the Nanticoke River. Based in Dorchester County, Maryland, the Nause-Waiwash are the remnants of what Europeans call Nanticoke, Choptank and Pocomoke tribes who fled into the marshes in the 1700s to avoid execution. These three names, Nanticoke, Choptank and Pocomoke, are the names of the three major rivers in the area, which are tributaries of the majestic Chesapeake Bay. These “Indians” or Native Americans were first “discovered” by the famous Captain John Smith during his exploration of the Chesapeake Bay in 1609, and are well documented in his writings and history books everywhere.
