Rigging 101: Uprigging a Skipjack

Step aboard a piece of Chesapeake Bay history and learn the fundamentals of traditional sailing during this hands-on Rigging 101 workshop. Led by Vessel Conservation Manager Sam Hilgartner and Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum volunteers, participants will help prepare the historic 1955 skipjack Rosie Parks for the upcoming sailing season. Along the way, guests will gain practical experience with essential maritime skills such as knot tying, splicing, lashings, and sail handling while learning the terminology and techniques behind traditional rigging. By the end of the weekend, the vessel will be fully rigged and ready to sail—offering a rewarding glimpse into the craftsmanship and heritage of Chesapeake Bay watermen.
