Profs & Pints Annapolis: Tolkien's Fight Against Futurism
January 13th; Graduate Hotel, Annapolis 5:00pm – 7:30pm
Profs and Pints Annapolis take a thoughtful dive into the mind of J.R.R. Tolkien with “Tolkien’s Fight Against Futurism,” a talk exploring how the beloved author pushed back against the speed, machinery, and modernity of the early 20th century. Led by Loyola University Maryland philosophy professor Graham McAleer, the discussion looks at how Tolkien’s experiences as an artist and World War I soldier shaped his deep commitment to beauty, patience, and tradition—and how those values are woven throughout The Lord of the Rings and his wider legendarium. From Dark Lords to Hobbits, you’ll gain fresh insight into Tolkien’s work as a philosophical meditation on beauty, vanity, and time, and leave with a richer appreciation for the timeless power of his stories.
