Edgewater, MD – New local bookstore and cafe located in the Main Street at South River Colony shopping center, Wyrd Bookstore, will be celebrating its one-year anniversary. All are invited to enjoy an evening of trivia, costume contests, and bookish fun. Attendees can bring a friend, and to keep the Halloween spirit going, dress up (literary costumes encouraged) for the bookstore’s ticketed “birthday party” on Saturday, November 2nd.
Straight from their official website, “Wyrd is an old English word referring to the idea that destiny is not predetermined, but is shaped and molded by individual choice and unfolds as an interconnected series of events.” They opened their doors in November 2023 with aspirations of building a gathering space for the community: a “third place” where people can come to read books, slowly sip their mugs of delicious coffee and tea, and spend time with their neighbors or meet new friends.
The curated shelves are stocked with not only new and used books, but a variety of unique gifts, including their signature gift item: Cratefuls, individually made themed baskets full of books, mugs, candles, journals, and more.
Wyrd hosts book clubs and writing groups, author readings, Storytime for the kids every Thursday and Sunday, and a variety of themed parties and events. There’s even a tiny fairy that hides somewhere new in the store each day and kids can find her ten times for a prize.
The importance of supporting local community is always on display at Wyrd, from their coffee provided by local roaster, Orinoco, decorative teapots filled with seasonal tea from Euphoric Herbals Apothecary and The Happy Seed, as well baked goods from local caterer, The Bell House Catering. Local artisans find space there to showcase their crocheted goods, art prints, and other hand-made goods. Wyrd also has a Pay it Forward program, where customers can buy books to donate to local organizations, to ensure books are accessible to everyone.
