In recent years, wedding cakes have leaned bare, with frosting-free designs upstaging fondant decals and buttercream ruffles. And frankly, we love that the naked cake puts emphasis back on taste. But when cakes cost up to $10 per slice, you’re making an investment, and we think it’s only right that the aesthetics reflect the price. A good cake is a work of art! So find a baker who will inject your cake with your personality via hand-painted flowers, sweet calligraphy or a meaningful emblem. “I love the creative freedom this trend allows,” says Angela Awunor, a local wedding cake baker. During her consultations, she learns all she can about a couple and the details of their day, so that she can create an original cake that complements their overall vision. “To brides, I say, ‘Know your details, budget, color scheme, and flowers, and hire a cake artist who can create your cake and not a copy,’” Awunor explains.
