Q. How can an employer determine whether a potential employee is legally authorized to work in the U.S.?
A. Employers can use E-Verify, a free Internet-based system, available through U.S. Department of Homeland Security that compares information from an employee’s Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, to data from U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration records to confirm employment eligibility. Employer will need the employee to complete form I-9 providing information that the employer uses in verifying eligibility. E-Verify also alerts the employer when an employee’s work authorization is expiring.
