In 1969, when Walter Winston of Preston came to work as the part-time custodian at the Academy Art Museum in Easton, MD, then known as the Academy of the Arts, the organization was only 11 years old. Walter, who at the time worked full-time for the Talbot County Public Schools (TCPS) as a custodian, enjoyed working with people and found his skills at the schools helped him in his day-to-day operations at the Museum. In 2001, after retiring from the TCPS, Walter took a full-time job as Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds with the Museum, caring for the people and the building entrusted with his care.
According to Erik Neil, Director, “Walter’s value to the Museum has been priceless. He is a combination of knowledge, experience and incredible goodwill.” After 43 years, Walter has retired from the Museum and is looking forward to spending more time with his wife Theresa and has three grown children and two grandchildren.
