Veterinarian | Great Scottie Veterinary Clinic
A native of Glasgow, Scotland, Dr. Euan Murray knew from a young age that he wanted to become a veterinarian. As a teenager, he worked on a dairy farm every day after school. When he was 18 years old, he was accepted to the University of Glasgow Veterinary School and simultaneously pursued a career in professional rugby.
After graduation, Dr. Murray played the sport for 13 years, and until recently, he held the record for the most games played in his position for the Scotland Rugby team. Following his retirement from rugby, he returned to the field of veterinary medicine to continue his studies and completed several internships in the United States.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your profession?
I love seeing the medical care we provide make a tangible difference in an animal’s health and quality of life—like when a dog comes back for a recheck after cruciate ligament surgery. A few months before surgery, the dog was hardly able to walk, but now he is running around and enjoying life again. And it’s a great feeling when a senior cat comes back for a visit, and the owner tells us that she is jumping again and seems to have a new lease on life. Caring for our patients is incredibly rewarding!
What technological advancements/innovations are you seeing in the field of veterinary medicine?
Just like human medicine, veterinary medicine is in an exciting stage of technological advancement. Our clinic offers multiple cutting-edge treatment options, from regenerative medicine and photobiomodulation (laser therapy) to monoclonal antibody therapy. Regenerative medicine uses the body’s own tools, such as blood products and stem cells, to repair damaged cells and tissues. We are also using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy to help restore joint function and reduce pain in dogs, and we’re seeing impressive results!
