brWith summer concerts in midseason form and the beginning of football season right in front of us, this weekend offers a fantastic opportunity to entice our sensibilities with the best local music and sports. br
brTonight, the Ticked Off Music Fest will take over the Loews Annapolis Hotel Powerhouse at 6:30 p.m. as part of a concert series dedicated to the awareness, prevention, and cure of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. Les Stroud from Discovery Channel’s "Survivorman" TV show will be playing acoustic guitar & harmonica and speak about his TV show. Gregg Kirk of The Zen Engines and Alisa Turner will be performing songs inspired by their stories of living with Lyme disease. Dirk Schwenk will close out the show with his own performance. Tickets for the concert are $50. br
brThe Annapolis Symphony Orchestra will be performing at Quiet Waters Park’s outdoor theatre Sunday at 5:30 p.m. for Lexus Pops in the Park. This all-ages program features performances from Rolando Sanz, who will sing the national anthem and an aria from Donizetti's The Elixir of Love. Music from Liszt, Sibelius, and Duke Ellington are on the docket along with a special salute to the U.S. Navy with Richard Rodgers' Victory at Sea and the USNA fight song, Anchors Aweigh.br
brThe Monty Alexander Jazz Festival makes its annual return to Easton with five amazing performances at Avalon Theatre from Thursday through Sunday. br
brHere is the slated lineup for the festival:
brbrThe Garfield Center for the Arts in Chestertown will host 4th Annual Kent Massive Music Festival from 3-10 p.m. on Saturday with a diverse musical lineup ranging from hip-hop to heavy metal and post-punk to neo-soul. The performing artists are Dogs & Day Drinkers, KCMD Cypher, Wolfjacket, Akoko, Gnar Dogs, Vitamin K, Gypsy Nightmare, and Lie For Fun.
brbrThe final installment of Thursday Night with the Stars will occur tonight from 7-8:30 p.m. at Annapolis City Dock with oldies music from the Carr’s Beach 50’s era.
brbrRams Head on Stage is jam-packed with musical talent this weekend. Here is the weekend lineup:br
brbrThe Kelly Bell Band will be performing at Annapolis Towne Centre Friday Night Summer Concert Series from 7-8:30 p.m.
brbrWe move from guitars to the gridiron, where both the Navy Midshipmen and Maryland Terrapins kick off their 2014 football seasons.
brbrNavy will play host to the Ohio State Buckeyes at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore Saturday at noon. At least 60,000 fans are expected to be in attendance to catch the Mids take on the fifth-ranked team in the country. With star Ohio State’s quarterback Braxton Miller out for the season, it will be interesting to see how Navy’s defense will combat the Buckeyes offense. Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds, who ran for 31 touchdowns and threw for eight in 2013, is a Heisman sleeper and is expected to produce like he did last season.br
brMaryland’s first game as a member of the Big Ten Conference will take place against James Madison on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Byrd Stadium in College Park. With star wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Deon Long returning from injury, hopes are high for the Terps as they enter uncharted territory. br
brFrom football to futbol, be sure to check out D.C. United take on the New York Red Bulls at R.F.K. Stadium on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. as they continue to work towards winning the Eastern Conference. br
brOur local minor league baseball teams will be closing their seasons on Monday at 2:05 p.m. when the Bowie Baysox take on the Altoona Curve at Prince George’s County Stadium and the Delmarva Shorebirds compete against the Hickory Crawdads at Perdue Stadium. br
