On Friday, May 24th, the United State Naval Academy celebrated the Class of 2019’s commissioning during a two-hour graduation ceremony at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. Of the 1,030 midshipmen graduates, 765 were commissioned as Navy ensigns and 265 commissioned as second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Acting U.S. Secretary of Defense, Patrick M. Shanahan, delivered the commencement address, which alluded to challenging the status quo; he leaned heavily on feudal Japanese and Samurai culture as a theme.
