Originally from the Washington DC region, Dr. Cashman completed his undergraduate training at the University of Virginia and then moved back to Washington where he attended medical school at The George Washington University. Dr. Cashman completed his Orthopedic Surgery residency at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and then was asked to stay on as an Attending Surgeon/Instructor at Grady Memorial Hospital, a Level 1 trauma center affiliated with Emory University. His interests in orthopedics gravitated towards lower extremity reconstruction and he performed two fellowships in Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Surgery—the first at Emory University, and the second in Birmingham, Alabama at the American Sports Medicine Institute. Upon completion of his training, he moved with his family to Maryland and is a partner at Anne Arundel Orthopedic Surgeons and operates at Anne Arundel Medical Center and the Riva Road Surgery Center in Annapolis.
Dr. Cashman is a member of multiple Orthopedic Societies. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, the Clinical Orthopedic Society, The Eastern Orthopedic Association, and the Southern Orthopedic Association. He currently is a team physician for the Baltimore Orioles Double–A farm team, The Bowie Baysox.
Dr Cashman has an interest in total ankle reconstruction and was recognized with a front page article in the Capital newspaper for his work with the device. He has trained and certified on both primary and revision total ankle replacements with over five different types of the device.
His interest in sports medicine injuries to the foot and ankle come from his time at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, AL, where high level professional and collegiate athletes traveled for orthopedic care. He has been involved with research on open versus minimally invasive Achilles tendon rupture repairs. Dr. Cashman also trained under Dr. John Gould who advanced techniques in lateral ankle ligament reconstruction after severe ankle sprains.
Dr. Cashman was a founding board member of the Wellness House of Annapolis, a non-profit organization, which he helped start with his wife Dr. Kelly Sullivan, a plastic surgeon in Annapolis. Initially, the project started with the support of the Annapolis Rotary Club, where Drs. Cashman and Sullivan were both members. It has now blossomed into a clubhouse where cancer patients and their families can go for education and support during their cancer treatment.
On a personal note, Dr Cashman is an avid swimmer and is a member of the Naval Academy Aquatic Club as a Master Swimmer. He has also competed in many charity swim events. This past summer he completed the 4.4 mile Chesapeake Bay Swim. He is in his seventh year of coaching soccer for the Annapolis Soccer Clinic and has recently started coaching for AYLA Lacrosse. He is a St. Mary's parent and happily-married father of three wonderful children.
Q: I’ve injured my ankle. Why do I need to see an Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Subspecialist?
A: When you have an injury, the correct diagnosis can save time and get you back on the road to recovery ASAP which, for all athletes, is important. A fellowship-trained, orthopedic, foot and ankle subspecialist has completed four years of medical school, five years of orthopedic surgery training, and has performed one or two fellowships in Foot and Ankle Surgery post-residency. Experience and training matter when it comes to obtaining the correct diagnosis and, even more importantly, the correct treatment to get new or seasoned athletes back in the game!
