This delightful musical invites us to spend time with the March family as the four sisters grow into womanhood and find their destinies in Concord and Boston, Massachusetts. It is set during the Civil War, a time when their father is called away to serve and they are managing at home on their own. Jo, the storyteller and writer, creates amateur theatricals whose plots echo the blood and guts stories she persistently sends to publishers despite rejection after rejection. The energetic acting out of these stories is part of the fun of the evening as well as the more serious portrayals of the girls’ experiences growing up, meeting their future husbands and coping with disappointment and loss. The buoyant music sweeps to the show’s triumphant conclusion as Jo ultimately finds both a publisher for her book and love where she least expects it.
