Human communities have been a part of the Chesapeake landscape since there was a Chesapeake landscape. The Smithsonian Environmental Archaeology Laboratory (SEAL) Team seeks, documents, and analyzes the human element in the changing Bay ecology, providing time depth not otherwise achievable in the natural sciences. This illustrated presentation summarizes some of SEAL Team’s findings from three sites on the campus of the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center: the 1,500-year-old Smithsonian Pier site; Shaw’s Folly (1650s-1680s); and Woodlawn House (1730s-present).

Jim Gibb is a product of public-school education on Long Island and he earned his degrees from the State University of New York system. He has been a practicing archaeologist for nearly 50 years.
