Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra's Violin Virtuoso
Easton Church of God 1009 N. Washington Street, Easton, Maryland 21601
The Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra kicks off its 27th season as the Eastern Shore’s only professional symphony orchestra with its season opening concert, “Violin Virtuoso,” on Thursday, September 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of God in Easton. This concert is one of 25 Masterworks full orchestra concerts and eight Ensemble concerts being offered between September and May.
Grammy-winning conductor Michael Repper envisions the September concert as one of “Tragedy to Triumph.” It begins with Brahms’ Tragic Overture and ends with Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, performed by Grace Park, winner of the Naumburg International Violin Competition. Repper describes Park as “one of the great young violinists of our time,” performing on a rare 1717 Guarneri violin. The concert will also feature the rarely heard Symphony in A Minor by Alice Mary Smith (1839-1884). Educated at the Royal Academy of Music, Smith was the first British woman to compose a symphony, and her music is described as “marked by elegance and grace … power and energy.”
