Homemade tortillas may sound intimidating but they couldn’t be easier to make. A few simple ingredients, ten or so minutes and you’ve got fresh, warm tortillas on hand.
Ingredients
3 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 cup warm water
Directions
Combine flour, salt and baking powder in a large bowl. Add in oil and mix until coarse crumbs form. Mix in water and stir well until it makes a cohesive dough. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead a few times. Place back in the bowl and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Turn the dough back on to the surface. Split the dough into 12 equal 2 ounce pieces. Roll them into balls. Use a rolling pin and roll each ball until they are 6 to 7 inches around. Lay them flat individually, do not stack. Heat a pan over medium high heat. Do not place any oil in it. Once hot, place one tortilla and cook for about a minute until it is own and bubbly. Flip and cook on the other side about 30 seconds. Remove and place on a plate. Repeat with remaining tortillas. Once cooked, they can be stacked and covered with a towel to keep warm.
Makes 12 tortillas.
