Adam was born a few weeks early so when his development was delayed, it was considered normal for a preemie. However, at six months it was evident that Adam wasn’t progressing as he should.
After many tests and doctor visits and just before his first birthday, Adam was diagnosed with Menkes, a rare and fatal condition. In those months of uncertainty and fear, our job here at The Arc was to offer Adam’s family the support and resources they needed to move from the crushing reality of their child’s diagnosis to a path of hope.
Adam is almost four years old—a year older than his predicted lifespan—and is starting preschool at Central Special in Edgewater. Due to the therapeutic equipment that The Arc was able to provide for him, he is learning to hold his head up, realize cause and effect, and is having a great time doing it!
rHeidi, Adam’s mom says, “I don’t have a lot of time with Adam. I never set out in parenthood to say ‘goodbye.’
rI have to cram a lifetime into whatever time I do have.”

rThe Arc of the Central Chesapeake Region enables individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to rent or own homes, ultimately achieving independent living in the community of their choice. Our primary goal is the availability of statewide opportunities for “self-controlled and self-determined housing.”
rThe Arc is working with housing specialists in Anne Arundel, Caroline, Dorchester, Queen Anne and Talbot Counties to find homes, assist in securing funding, and provide homeownership training. All of this provides a path to independence for the individuals we serve.
rMegan, 40, who suffered a traumatic brain injury when she was hit by a drunk driver, has been living in her own home for eight years now. She says:
r“I love it. It makes me feel independent and like I am just like everyone else. I am proud it is all mine! Also, I can hang a bird feeder outside my window. I love watching the birds. I also like hanging out with my neighbors and watching the kids play ball in the street.”
