Art students to be featured at Shore Regional Breast Center gallery

The art gallery at Shore Regional Breast Center will feature the work of Talbot County Public Schools art students and teachers when the new exhibit opens on Friday, July 1. A selection of finger and sponge paintings, oils and watercolors, pen and ink drawings, and quilted images will be on display from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Memorial Hospital at Easton, 219 S. Washington Street in Easton. The exhibit is open at other times by appointment. “Our relationship with artists in the community began in 2006 when a group of east cancer survivors created a mosaic mural as part of their recovery process,” explains Mary Jane Flynn, RN, nurse coordinator for Shore Regional Breast Center. “Since we opened the art gallery in 2009, the Breast Center has featured the work of east cancer survivors and Shore Health System employees and volunteers.” When Kathy Dill, Fine Arts Supervisor for Talbot County Public Schools (TCPS) grades K- through 12, heard about the Shore Regional Breast Center art gallery, she proposed a student art show. “I like to provide my teachers and students with a theme to focus on when they are creating their artwork,” Dill explains. “The only guideline for this project was that they had to use pink in whatever they created.” The TCPS art teachers took Dill's idea and turned it into a learning opportunity for their students. When they introduced the art project to their students, the TCPS art teachers led discussions about the effects of cancer on families. Dill says, “These sessions were very engaging since many students had experienced this disease through family and friends.” Dill adds, “I also felt that participating in this art project would be a great opportunity for the students to see the hospital as a friendly place. This collaboration with the Breast Center is another great example of the partnerships we provide at TCPS to involve our students in community projects as we share their many talents in the arts.” When St. Michaela High School art teacher Bridget Whited introduced the “pink art exhibit” to her students she asked them to share a message of hope in their artwork.
