Mermaids of the Chesapeaker
Benfield Gallery, 485 Jumpers Hole Road in Severna Park, presents “Mermaids of the Chesapeake” an exhibit of hand-made linoleum block prints by Maryland artist Kathy Daywalt. The exhibit opens on Monday, March 14 and will run through April 10, 2011.

Daywalt, a resident of Anne Arundel County, is a prolific working artist with over 30 years of experience. Growing up on the South River, she was the true “water baby.” Feet up and head down, she spent hours being a mermaid trying to eathe underwater. These early memories inspired her to create this series of mermaids.

The whimsical Chesapeake mermaids illustrate Daywalt's skill and wit. Both fun and fantasy are ever-present: “Shell-a-phone” features a mermaid enjoying a shell phone conversation; “In the Drink” shows a mermaid perched in a martini glass.

Daywalt's “Nouveau Folk” style is readily recognizable whether in her floral, animal or mythical series. She has studied with Pat Barnes, Jane Schwartz, Marie Linnekin and Richard Niewerth among others. Her work has been included in numerous one person, group and juried exhibitions on the East Coast. Frequently appearing in publications, her work is now in private collections from coast to coast.

Linoleum Block Prints

Linoleum block printing allows the artist to create unique textural effects. After drawing the initial design, the artist uses tools to cut away or sculpt the surface of the linoleum tile. The linoleum surface is then covered with special inks and the image is transferred to paper. This complex process of cutting away the surface of the tile can be repeated multiple times with additional colors.
The public is invited to meet Kathy Daywalt on Saturday, March 19th from 2 – 4 pm. Kathy will discuss the process of linoleum cut relief block printing. Light refreshments will be served. This event is open to the public.
