Indian Creek School in Crownsville cele ated its 40th anniversary in September, with more than 605 students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade joining faculty members and administrators in a large birthday party that was held during lunch on both campuses. The Solo Choir led Upper School students in singing happy birthday while a large eagle flew around the Lower and Middle School, illustrating the positive energy generated by the school’s mascot. Birthday cakes added a festive element of surprise to lunch that day.
Founded on September 4, 1973, Indian Creek School (ICS) started with four staff members and 33 students in four nursery, kindergarten, and first-grade classes. The enrollment doubled one year later. A Middle School was added in 1977, and the first 8th-grade class graduated in 1979. After many years of growing enrollment, a capital campaign was launched in 2004 that supported the building of a 96,000-square-foot Upper School on a 114-acre campus just a few miles away from the Lower and Middle School. The new campus was completed in 2006, and the first Upper School class graduated in 2008. One example of the strong academic program is the success of ICS students with Advanced Placement (AP) classes and exams. In 2013, 24 students earned AP recognition. Students can apply to participate in the ICS STEM Program and rising seniors can apply to write a thesis in the humanities with a faculty advisor. During the 2012-13 academic year, the varsity boys basketball team and girls lacrosse teams both won divisional championships, illustrating remarkable growth in the athletic program at Indian Creek.

Indian Creek School’s founding philosophy was based upon the fundamentals of developmental psychology. A rigorous academic program has consistently been offered with opportunities for each student to excel in the arts, physical activities, and leadership. Indian Creek has always prided itself on serving a diverse population. Students attend from all over Anne Arundel County and the region to experience this academically challenging college preparatory education offered in a collaborative, nurturing community.
