Lynn Abercrombie and her late husband, Tom, have traveled the world over as photographers and writers for the National Geographic Magazine. Their memoirs and exquisite photos have been compiled in a stunning book, Traveling the World for National Geographic.
She will be presenting the book at a Friday night coffee at the Captain Avery Museum, 1418 EW Shady Side Road, on November 4. Doors will open at 7 p.m. with coffee and homemade desserts being served, and the program will begin at 7:30.
In the opening of the book, Tom was described as the epitome of the National Geographic journalist, possessing all the talent and guts to take on any situation. From the deserts of Saudi Arabia to the jungles of Venezuela, and from the white sands of the Fiji Islands to sailing the Baltic Sea, Tom’s ingenuity and adaptability were demonstrated many times.
Lynn, an accomplished photographer in her own right, traveled with her husband to many isolated and forbidding places. Women and children felt more at ease being photographed by Lynn, and she was allowed to visit harems and other places off-limits to men.
During their career, they created more than 150,000 images.
Tom and Lynn met in Stillwater, Minnesota, High School. In 1956 he joined the National Geographic, and after 38 years of adventures, he was ready to retire. He wanted to sail White Tiger, do some boat building, and write his memoirs. The book contains most of the stories he wrote. Tom passed away before he was able to finish The Lady Lynn, his skipjack, or the book which was to be a summary of their lives together. With the help of their daughter, Mari, and grandson, Isaac Fer, the book was completed, and is now available to the public.
Tom and Lynn have been part of the Shady Side community where they have been held in very high regard as the cele ities they are. They have presented slide shows of their travels several times at the Museum, and Tom worked on the restoration of the Edna Florence in the boat shed. It is fitting that their memories as presented in their book should be ought to their many friends in the community at this special program.
