Annapolis, MD - Beginning in mid-September 2024, much of the South Beach picnic area of Sandy Point State Park will be closed to visitors as we begin a long-awaited project to improve access, revitalize picnic areas and restore its native ecology.
The project includes an improved mile-long ADA-accessible perimeter trail with interpretive signage, providing information about the various habitats and the many native species they support. It is hoped that this trail with unparalleled bayfront views will become an amenity for the diverse community of park visitors – from the families that visit for beachfront fun in the summer to bird watchers and dog walkers in the winter.
Natural features of the site will be enhanced through the establishment of meadows and wetlands, full of native plant species that support diverse birds and animals. These features will also help ensure the South Beach area is resilient to extreme weather and storm events, providing a buffer to the Bay and absorbing stormwater runoff.
New and improved picnic areas will be provided throughout the site to eliminate issues with standing water and muddy areas. Hundreds of trees and shrubs will be planted for additional shade. New grills, coal bins, trash receptacles and tables will be provided. Grass play areas will be restored, providing plenty of room for kite-flying, frisbee or soccer. Lastly, an improved Market Circle will be built to provide a gathering place for visitors and eventually for food-truck or other vendors to display their offerings, providing additional options for food and drink.
The construction project is expected to be complete by Memorial Day 2025. Some fencing to protect establishing meadows and trees will likely remain through at least the first summer season but it is hoped that the newly enhanced site will be open to welcome visitors as expected. Fishing access to the beach and jetty will be continuously maintained via the existing trails at either end of the site. Please respect the construction barriers throughout this process as we strive to establish Sandy Point as an ecological gem on the beautiful Chesapeake Bay.
