On The Green Inc. offers aeration and seeding services to help you to enjoy a beautiful lawn year-round.
Fall will be here before you know it; however, you might not think much about maintaining your lawn. Engaging in proper lawn care during the fall is essential for enjoying a thick, healthy lawn for the rest of the year. Grass becomes stressed during the summer by heat and drought. Aerating reduces soil compaction allowing oxygen and nutrients to reach the root system. And overseeding fills in stressed areas and improves density. On The Green Inc. offers aeration and seeding services to help you to enjoy a beautiful lawn year-round. Keep reading to learn more about the benefits of aeration and overseeding.
Overseeding Your Lawn
During the summer, your lawn can get damaged from heat stress and foot traffic. This can lead to thin or sparse areas. To combat this damage to your yard, you need to overseed during the fall, ideally during the early autumn months. Overseeding introduces new grass seeds to fill bare areas, thickens existing turf, and increases insect damage and lawn disease resistance. Rain can help new seeds to germinate by moistening them. This is important so the seeds can take root before the cold winter sets in. Seeding your lawn combats stressed areas and improves a lawn’s health and beauty.
What is Aeration?
Compacted soil prevents water from seeping through to the soil, which can stunt grass growth. Aeration provides grass access to air and water, allowing for deeper root growth. When aerating a lawn, a specialized machine punches holes in the soil to loosen it. This allows the ground to breathe, releasing nutrients, oxygen, and water into your grass. Fall is the best time of year to aerate your lawn, as the combination of cool air and warm soil is optimal for grass growth.
Caring for Your Lawn
After aerating and seeding your lawn, it is important to follow proper aftercare procedures to ensure the longevity of your grass.
Watering: Water your lawn daily for 3 weeks to promote germination and establish new roots. One 15-minute watering in the morning per area is adequate to maintain moisture for newly germinating seeds. Adjust your schedule for hot days or rain. Following those three weeks, continue watering as needed to avoid stress.
Mowing: Mowing can resume as needed; however, you should do so carefully to avoid damage to new seedlings. Avoid mowing on days 10-14 after over-seeding, as this is when the seed begins to germinate. Always use good mowing practices with sharp blades, a minimum 4” height, avoid cutting wet grass and remove excess clippings.
Fertilizing: Your new lawn will need regular care to stay green and healthy. Fertilizers or herbicides can impact the results of seed either positively or negatively. Look into one of our many Green Care Lawn Programs to get the best possible results.
