Third Quarter: "As it reaches the three-quarter point in its month, the Moon once again shows us one side of its disc illuminated and the other side in darkness. However, the side that we saw dark at the first quarter phase is now the lit side."

Perch: With our White Perch Open coming up this weekend, perch fishing is conveniently excellent! You can catch perch both in shallow and in deeper water in all of the major rivers, and also in the main bay. The main bay will most likely be your best bet for catching that winning white perch! The bridge pilings are a great place to target perch with Chesapeake Sabiki rigs and fish bites. The six and seven foot knolls and points and the mouths of rivers are also good places to check out north of the bridge. South of the bridge try shallow water areas like Thomas Point and the mouths of Eastern Bay and the Choptank. Here you can target those big white perch by throwing a larger profile lure such as a Z-man 3″ minnow on a light jig head.
Rockfish: The bay bridge and just north around Podickory Point, Love Point and the mouth of the Magothy, Patapsco and Chester Rivers has been good for both live lining spot and jigging. Eastern Bay and Poplar Island are also good, especially at first and last night. Top water fishing at point inside the rivers is always very good at morning and evening as well!
Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish: Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel are in the bay as far north as Poplar Island and Bloody Point, and the bite is only getting better and better! Your best bet is to look for breaking fish and diving birds. Cast to them with metal jigs or troll small spoons on 1 or 2 planers. Pick up your speed for these fish, especially mackerel! Increase your retrieval when casting, and troll at 7-9 knots. The mackerel bite is also more of an early morning or late evening bite!
Redfish: The bull red bite has slowed down a bit. They are still around, but they are a little more spread out rather than schooled up. While you can still sight cast for them or cast 1-1.5 oz jig heads under breaking bluefish, it would also be a very good time of year to troll large spoons or surgical hoses.
Snakehead: Snakehead are mostly hunkered down in cover in this hot weather! Try fishing in the early morning or evening, and fish lures like chatterbaits and popping frogs to try to entice that bite. You will need to be patient! If you see signs of fish in the area, keep throwing those lures at them to convince them to bite.
Crabbing: Crabbing has been excellent, especially in our Western shore rivers such as the South, Magothy and Severn. You do need to look around for clean water though. The rain has made things pretty muddy, but we have a lot of grass in these rivers which is creating some nice clean spots where you can get on an excellent crabbing bite! Running a trotline with razor clams or chicken necks has been producing best.
