Celtic rockers The Young Dubliners will take a eak from the studio to road test some of the new material beginning Fe uary 10. The tour leads up to their annual St. Patty’s Day performance at the Shamrock Festival in San Diego.
“The way America cele ates St Paddy’s Day and the days leading up to it is like no where else on earth” says front man Keith Roberts. “It would be blasphemy not to be on the road at this time of the year”
In 2010, the Dubs toured extensively around the US and Europe in support of Saints And Sinners, the title borrowed from an Irish proverb, the band's journeys have been filled with "poets and patriots, saints and sinners". Packed with free-wheeling party anthems to politically charged songs to poignant, harmony-laden jams, Saints and Sinners finds the Dubliners seamlessly blending their trademark rock and Celtic influences and offering up a vi ant collection of songs bursting with wit and wisdom.
The disc came on the heels of 2008’s With All Due Respect: The Irish Sessions, a collection of the best of the best representing Irish poets, playwrights and vagabonds. Indeed, centuries old traditional melodies shimmer bookended by distinctive romps through the songcraft of Shane McGowan, which ush up against the wistfully sad lyrics of Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh.
This year the shows are already piling up and the band will be doing its usual balancing act of recording a new album while still maintaining a hectic touring schedule. “Its just the way our lives are at this point” says Roberts. “We are a working band and that means staying out there as much as we can. We constantly keep the pressure on ourselves to write good songs and make good albums.”
Following their U.S. leg, the Dubs will continue to tour overseas in Ireland and Denmark. On the Irish leg of the tour the band will fly approximately 100 American fans with them to see the sights and cheer them on at the gigs. “You’re great tour buddies you Americans” Roberts jokes. “This will be our fifth year inging fans home with us for the Irish tour and it has been a huge success and a lot of fun”
