2011 marks the sixth year we have commemorated Women’s History Month with profiles of local women who have made lasting contributions to the Chesapeake Bay Region. Each day on our website during the month of March we posted the profile of one of the women we’ve written about and recognized for their multitude of talents.
rWomen’s History Month began in California in 1978 as just one week, “Women’s History Week.” Three years later in 1981, our Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski (now the longest serving female U.S. senator in history) teamed up with Utah Senator Orrin Hatch to propose “Women’s History Month.” Finally, in 1987 Congress officially declared the entire month of March “Women’s History Month.”
rOur What’s Up? Annapolis magazine began publishing the profiles of “Women Who Have Made a Difference” in March of 2006 and What’s Up? Eastern Shore began publishing “Women Who Have Made a Difference”, their inaugural publication year, in March 2008.
