Ginger Cove is one of three retirement communities nationwide to participate in the program, others include Kendal at Ithaca in Ithaca, N.Y., and WindsorMeade in Williamsburg, Va. The weeklong event from August 22 to August 27, 2011 will be complemented by discussion groups and lectures led by Civil War experts. To kick off the program, the opening reception was held on Monday, August 22nd at Ginger Cove.
Residents of Ginger Cove gathered to unveil a Civil War Journal based on artifacts and literature left behind from the residents’ relatives. As these unique stories were read, bursts of shock and laughter rang throughout the hall.
Martha Moore, a resident and contributor to the Civil War Journal said, “There are a number of stories, some are eyewitness stories written back in the 1860s during the Civil War, descriptions of battles, descriptions of what life was like as a soldier… It’s just been a great project”
Residents truly enjoyed hearing such detailed accounts particularly because it ought a personal touch to the community as the ancestors themselves narrated.
