Personalized and compassionate focus, a strong team approach, and state-of-the-art medical care distinguish Mid-Shore Women's Health (MSWH) in Easton, Maryland—a comprehensive Obstetrics and Gynecology practice with a 40-year tradition of providing quality service to the community. Michael J. Mullen, M.D., and Sharon Liu, D.O., M.S., partner with their patients from adolescence and motherhood to menopause and beyond.
High-risk Obstetrics, family planning and minimally invasive surgery are among Dr. Mullen's special interests. “My training and time at a very busy hospital when I served in the Air Force gave me the preparation to handle and respond quickly to the unexpected,” he says. “I am involved in quality improvement processes within my specialty and also throughout the hospital and Shore Health System.” Prior to his military service, Dr. Mullen earned his medical degree at West Virginia University and completed his residency training at Southern Illinois University. He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Also board certified, Dr. Liu relocated to Easton after completing her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology with the Christiana Care Health System in Newark, Delaware. Prior to that training, Dr. Liu completed her medical degree at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and a Master's degree in anatomy at the University of Maryland. Her special interests include adolescent Gynecology, high-risk Obstetrics and laparoscopic Gynecologic surgery.
The goal of MSWH has always been to personalize the practice of medicine, beginning with the initial phone call and including every patient contact afterwards. Dr. Liu says, “We strive to build lasting relationships with our patients.”
“The team approach involves weekly discussions of high-risk patients and daily collaboration to deliver a consistent and focused plan of care,” says Dr. Mullen. “Most importantly, the team includes the patient.” Keeping up with advances in surgical techniques and current technology is a priority for the practice.
As an expanded benefit for its patients, on high-risk Obstetrical and Gynecologic Oncology cases MSWH collaborates with specialists Janyne Althaus, M.D. of Johns Hopkins University's Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and Fouad Abbas, M.D., a Gynecologic Oncologist with Sinai Hospital. These consultations reinforce the personalized care provided by MSWH.
Many of MSWH's staff members have been with the practice since its inception. “We are very proud of the longevity of our staff,” says Dr. Liu. “It serves to strengthen our relationships with each other and with our patients. We seek to care for generations of women—grandmothers, mothers, daughters and granddaughters. We make it a point to actively engage partners and children in all of our obstetrical cases. That's part of being a patient-oriented and family-oriented practice.”
