Close out Women's History Month with textile historian Dr. Ann Wass. Using the diary of Martha Ogle Forman and other primary sources, Wass explores the garments created and worn by the enslaved at Rose Hill Plantation in northern Maryland during the early-to-mid 19th century. The mistress of Rose Hill, Forman's writing is a rich source of costume and textile information. Spanning the years 1814-1845, the diary includes types of garments worn by the enslaved, notes on seasonal fabrics and garments, and a trend toward the increasing use of commercially manufactured textiles to supplement those produced from plantation-raised fibers—flax, wool, and cotton.
