Sgt. Major Donna Dear
St. Michaels Library 106 Fremont St, Saint Michaels, Maryland 21663
Event price: $0.00
Sergeant Major Donna Dear will share stories of her life in the military as well as her life as co-owner of Pleasant Acres Farm. Dear served in the Army for twenty seven years including tours in Vietnam, and the Gulf War. Donna Dear was a part of the Women’s Army Corp at a time when neither, women or blacks were welcome. She is a member of the American Legion Blake-Blackston Post No. 77 where she served as the first female commander. In January of 2014, Dear created the Veteran’s Outreach Ministry at Mt. Cavalry United Methodist Church. Life after the military finds Donna Dear as co-owner of Mount Pleasant Acres Farm in Preston, MD. The farm is 70 acres that was once part of the Underground Railroad. Here, Dear and co-owner, Paulette Greene, a former teacher, raise organic grain and produce. As African Americans, Paulette and Donna feel a special connection to the property, and have helped other black farmers become established. They share a portion of their acreage with young farmers Blain Snipstal and Aleya Fraser of Black Dirt Farm. The Friends of the Library are sponsors of the speaker series and everyone is invited to bring their lunch or a snack and enjoy coffee and dessert provided by the library.
