Barbara Statas co-runs the photo club at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo on a volunteer basis. Access to the club is a Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) member benefit. In that role for the last seven years, she has donated numerous images to the Smithsonian and FONZ for their use in printed materials, e-newsletters, social media posts, books, magazines, calendars, fund-raising auctions, gift shop merchandise, and exhibit signage—all with the goal of helping spread the word about the Zoo’s wildlife conservation efforts and mission: “We save species”.
Barbara has been a long-time board member of the Gaithersburg Camera Club where she competes in the advanced division, where she has been awarded photographer of the year in digital projection two years in a row. She has consistently earned merit awards in the annual Glennie Memorial Nature Salon, and has been awarded the Grand Champion ribbon in the photography exhibit at the Montgomery County Fair several times.
