Winter Lecture Series: Freedom and the Press in Annapolis, 1765-66

Annapolis printer Jonas Green used his weekly Maryland Gazette newspaper to rally opposition to the Stamp Act and support the patriotic aims of the Sons of Liberty. Senior Historian Glenn E. Campbell discusses how Green and his partner, William Rind, exercised their right to freedom of the press to take a stand against unjust British taxation and help advance the cause of American liberty, a decade before the start of the Revolutionary War. Following the lecture, reenactor Diane Rey presents a vivid portrayal of Anne Catharine Hoof Green, who succeeded her husband Jonas as publisher of the Maryland Gazette, following his death.
