This Sunday, August 26th, celebrate your furriest family member (well, furriest non-human family member) on National Dog Day! Meet the puppers and doggos of the What’s Up? Media staff, some of which graciously took time out of their busy dog schedules to give us their dog-approved Dog Day celebration suggestions.
Lulu Tovey:
Loves going to work with her mama, Veronica, and visiting all the cubicles in the office, looking for treats.
Lulu’s Dog Day Activity Suggestion: Ever the socialite, Lulu recommends heading to Greene Turtle in Annapolis on Friday, August 24th for Paws About Town. Mingle with other community pups and pup-lovers, all while supporting Chesapeake Dogs & Cats Inc., a non-profit lifetime haven, no-kill animal rescue organization. Tickets are free and available at Whatsuptix.com.
Ginger Houck:
A fluffy ‘lil goldendoodle that just joined Editorial Director James Houck’s family last weekend!
Ginger’s Dog Day Activity Suggestion: As a young pup filled with energy, Ginger recommends heading to a local dog park or dog playground.
You can check out a list of off-leash dog parks in Maryland here.
Petey Peri:
He’s never seen anything he doesn’t think deserves at least a minute of barking, and will lick the toes of anyone coming within a five-yard radius.
Loves following his mom, Lisa, wherever she goes, and thinks that being house trained is overrated.
Cozumel Raymond:
Though he was trained by the Raymond family cat, 15-year-old Cozumel is not light-footed like the cat. His nickname is Mr. Big Ears, and he’s very loyal to his mama, Ashley.
Cozumel’s Dog Day Activity Suggestion: Cozumel is a strong believer in charity, and urges you to consider supporting a local animal non-profit or shelter. Donate money or goods, or spend some time volunteering. Here are a few local shelters and rescues to check out: the Maryland SPCA, the Anne Arundel SPCA, BARCS, Baywater Animal Rescue, the Humane Society of Kent County, Caroline Humane Society, Animal Welfare League of Queen Anne’s County, and the Senior Dog Sanctuary.
Zeus Max:
Loves snowstorms, going on runs around the neighborhood, and talking to his human roommates when they come home from work.
According to his good friend Elizabeth Carpenter, his paws are very floofy and fun to hold.
Sadie Kuhl:
Being the only girls in a house of boys, Sadie and mom, Beth, like to stick together. She is the biggest love bug and snuggler.
Sadie’s Dog Day Activity Suggestion: A strong believer in self-care, Sadie suggests treating your dog to a day of pampering. Perfect Pet Resort in Lothian, Dirty Paws Dog Spa in Edgewater, and Canine County Club in Queenstown all offer grooming and pampering services that will have your pup looking and feeling their very best.
Daisy Breese:
According to human sister Caley, Daisy hasn’t quite figured out how to sit like a regular dog. She’s very playful and loves people, apples are her favorite snack, and she’s training to be a therapy dog. She’s also an Instagram star! @littleyellow_daisy
Daisy’s Dog Day Activity Suggestion: Playful-pup Daisy suggests cooling off at one of the local dog beaches. Downs Memorial Park Dog Beach in Pasadena and Quiet Waters Park’s Dog Beach in Annapolis are both great choices!
Jade, Rubi, and Hank Quinn:
Event Director Melanie Quinn’s three amigos! Jade and Rubi recently welcomed ‘lil pupper-bro Hank to the Quinn family dog tribe.
Jade, Rubi, and Hank’s Dog Day Activity Suggestion: Grab a bite to eat with your pup! Stan & Joe’s, Boatyard Bar and Grill, Fado Irish Pub, and Annapolis Smokehouse all welcome dogs at their outdoor seating.
Rams Head Tavern, Federal House, Davis’ Pub, and Bruster’s Ice Cream even offer special nibbles and treats just for your dog.
Porter and Fleetwood Casselbury:
Chihuahua-pug mix Porter loves snuggling with his mom, Kelsey, and relishing in frequent belly rubs. 11-year-old Fleetwood is the quieter of the two. He loves his brother, Porter, and ear scratches.
Porter and Fleetwood’s Dog Day Activity Suggestion: Porter and Fleetwood suggest raising a glass to your loyal pup at Hemingway’s Restaurant’s first annual National Dog Day Yappy Hour on Sunday, August 26th, 2–8 p.m. Enjoy great local vendors, face painting, food and drinks, live music, and giveaways. Thinking about adding a new member to the family? Hemingway’s will also be partnering with the Animal Welfare League of Queen Anne’s County to host a dog adoption event from 2–6 p.m. Click here for more information.
Poe Bervid:
According to mom, Christine, Poe is an elegant 14-year-old lady who is the happiest when basking in the love of her family and friends.
Poe’s Dog Day Activity Suggestion: Poe has an appreciation for the finer things in life. She suggests purchasing your four-legged pal a new collar, leash, or chew toy. Our Best Of Annapolis winner for pet products, Paws Pet Boutique in Annapolis, is a great place to get toys and accessories that your dog is sure to love.
Winnie Reynolds:
Winnie loves catching frisbees, playing with ice cubes, and napping with her BFF Phyllis the cat. She has the softest ears in the tri-state area. Her favorite food is popcorn, and her favorite human is Entertainment Editor Cate Reynolds.
Winnie’s Dog Day Activity Suggestion: Party-dog Winnie recommends heading to her hometown of Baltimore for the third annual Dog Days of Summer Festival on Sunday, August 26th, 12–5 p.m. This family-friendly event will have a doggie photo booth, a dog park with doggie pools, cornhole and bocce tournaments, and tasty cocktails for humans over the age of 21 (147 in dog years). Proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Harford County, the Buddy Foundation of Maryland, and BARCS Animal Shelter. Tickets are $50 and available here.
Bear Sauve:
Bear likes to stay fit. He enjoys long runs, walks, and hikes. He’s a tug ‘o war enthusiast, and his favorite time of day is dinner time.
