We are hoping to demonstrate the generosity of our audience by asking them, and other patrons of Maryland Hall, to ‘recycle' cans of food during the month of May. The items can be placed in the recycling bins strategically placed in Maryland Hall and will go to Food Link, a major distributor of food to the disadvantaged in Anne Arundel County.
Says Cathy L Holstrom Food Link's Executive Director, “We are delighted to be the recipient of the ASO's “Recycling” Food Drive. We truly cannot keep enough food on our shelves, it flies off into the hands of the county's hungry residents within hours - and the need is just getting greater. Summer is a particularly critical time for us so we thank, in advance, those generous folk who contribute to the drive.”
Needed Food Link pantry items are:
Peanut butter & jelly
Canned meats and tuna
Rice
Instant mashed potatoes
Beef stew
Chunky soups and chili
Canned fruit
Applesauce
Mac & cheese
Saltine crackers
Spaghetti sauce
Juice – canned or boxed
Parmalot/shelf stable milk
Pop Tarts
Cereal
Gravy – can be cans or mixes to go with rice and potatoes
Spaghettios and other canned pasta
Gift cards to area grocery stores to purchase milk, ead, butter and other perishables
Food Link was established in 1991 as a grassroots, nonprofit safety net for the working poor. It has become the ‘last stop' when traditional support programs fail or turn them away. Donated goods and services are the core of their programs which support over 100 recipient agencies and charitable organizations. Since 1991, 22 million pounds of food and other essentials have been provided to members of the community.
The ASO Recycling Redefined performances are on May 6 and 7 at 8:00 pm at the Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis. Music Director José-Luis Novo and the ASO are paired with an exceptional guest artist. Israeli violinist Vadim Gluzman will play Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto on the 1690 Leopold Auer Stradivarius, for which the concerto was written.
Vadim Gluzman's technique and sensibility harkens back to the Golden Age of violinists in the 19th century while he incorporates the energy and passion of today. He is lauded as a player of great depth, virtuosity and technical illiance both when appearing as a soloist and with his wife, pianist Angela Yoffe.
Also featured in this last concert of the season are Johannes Brahms Variations on a Theme by Haydn, perhaps Brahms most imaginative orchestral work, composed in 1873 as homage to his hero. Completing the program are Sergei Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances. Rachmaninov's last work, the pieces recall pre-Bolshevik Russia and contain references to his previous works and other composers.
Tickets are priced from $25 with student tickets available for just $10. Tickets can be purchased through the ASO Box Office at 410-263-0907 or online at www.annapolissymphony.org.
All ticket holders are invited to a free and informative pre-concert lecture in the auditorium starting at 6.45pm. These entertaining talks, led by British pianist and musicologist Dr. Rachel Franklin, enhance the concert experience by providing historical and insightful perspectives on the music to be played. Lectures are sponsored by Bank of America.
