HBD’s longevity stems from several factors: the firm’s attorneys deliver good value for their services; the human side of each case is understood and emphasized, and the majority of the firm’s cases are from referrals. That is why Hillman, Brown & Darrow attorneys have repeatedly been honored in such publications as SmartCEO: Legal Elite; Super Lawyers, The Capital, and What’s Up? Annapolis.
rAnother major component in the success of the firm has been the diversity of talent and the breadth of knowledge of the attorneys and staff at Hillman, Brown & Darrow.
rSamuel J. Brown, a graduate of Anne Arundel Community College, the University of Virginia and American University’s Washington College of Law, concentrates his practice in the areas of domestic relations, administrative law and real estate. Clients can’t seem to say enough good things about this accomplished litigator. “You will never go wrong with him by your side,” one noted. Another client involved in a contract dispute explained, “The president of the bank I do business with recommended Sam Brown without so much as a pause for a breath.”
rMichael Darrow, a graduate of the University of Baltimore Law School and a Harvard-trained mediator, enjoys a family legal legacy—he’s a cousin of Clarence Darrow, one of America’s most famous attorneys. Concentrating on civil and corporate litigation, construction law, contract disputes, real estate law, collections, and personal injury, Darrow has represented many local businesses and contractors. Even opposing counsel respect and admire Darrow, as one recently noted: “I endorse Michael Darrow without reservation. His knowledge of the law, integrity and commitment to his clients is exceptional and worthy of notation.”
rDaniel J. Mellin, a graduate of Georgetown University and University of Maryland School of Law, concentrates his practice in the areas of estate planning, probate law, real estate development and transactions, zoning and land use, and business, commercial, and collections law. His attention to detail is well-known among his clients—as a recent client noted: “Dan is very thorough and methodical. He makes sure all of your bases are covered. He is also very personable and active in the community. He is definitely someone you would want to consult when making business decisions.”
rM. Evelyn Spurgin, a graduate of Duke University and the University of Maryland School of Law, focuses on personal injury litigation, worker’s compensation, family law, civil litigation, and appellate work. Her prior work as defense counsel for insurance carriers makes here well-suited to represent clients in personal injury matters.
rStacey B. Rice is a graduate of Rollins College and the University of Baltimore School of Law, cum laude. She has also been appointed to the Character Committee of the Court of Appeals and the Mentoring Program by the Court of Appeals, as well as being an Adjunct Professor at Anne Arundel Community College and a Board of Trustee for the Anne Arundel Bar Association. Stacey, recently admitted as a partner in the firm, has also been selected as one of Annapolis’ leading criminal lawyers—an assessment echoed by her clients: “She was empathetic in regard to my turmoil,” one recounted, “Yet calm, honest, and forthcoming in addressing the issues at hand.”
rAdditional veteran attorneys include Jonathan F. Pasterick, Brian D. Lyman, and Marietta B. Warren. Hillman, Brown & Darrow, however, is always evolving and growing. Crighton A. Chase recently joined the firm fresh from five years as an Anne Arundel County Assistant State’s Attorney. Crighton brings extensive experience in criminal and traffic litigation, and, as a native of Australia, an international component to HBD. Chase, a graduate of the University of Virginia and the University of Baltimore School of Law, practices in the areas of criminal law, domestic law, traffic matters including DWI’s, and juvenile law, among other areas.
rH. Winship Wheatley III, of counsel, returned to the firm, after being Director of Transportation for the Anne Arundel County Board of Education, with a vast knowledge in transportation and education law.
rThe Law firm of Hillman, Brown & Darrow understands the importance of respecting the law and their client’s best interests. Their years of experience allow them to evaluate cases and determine reasonable outcomes. If you are looking for reliable expectations, sound advice, and trusted counsel, your search ends at Hillman, Brown & Darrow.
