rLight House, a homelessness prevention and support center in Annapolis, was recently awarded $15,000 from the Carol M. Jacobsohn Foundation. The funds will be used for general operating expenses.
The Light House partners with many individuals, businesses, congregational groups and organizations to provide programs that empower people as they transition toward self-sufficiency. Programs include Building Employment Success Training (B.E.S.T.) Program, Assessment, Counseling and Referral Programs and Homelessness Prevention Programs.
According to Henry “Hank” Libby, president of the Carol M. Jacobsohn Foundation, “we made donations to the Light House, a homeless prevention and support center, because we felt that it was a very worthy cause, the need is clearly present and is growing. The Light House's activity (protecting, feeding, and housing the homeless) is effective and fits into our mission of helping underserved populations.”
As a local foundation, the Carol M. Jacobsohn Foundation focuses its grant making activities principally on 501c (3) (tax exempt) organizations in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County. Its mission is to improve the quality of life for the general community, primarily aiding economically or educationally disadvantaged women and children. The Foundation provides financial support to qualified charitable organizations involved in medical and social outreach programs, education, visual arts, women's issues, after school enrichment programs, and housing for qualified female heads of households in conjunction with municipal agencies. The Foundation places particular emphasis on programs that particularly benefit disadvantaged women and school aged children.
Elizabeth Kinney, Executive Director of the Light House explained, “the Carol Jacobsohn Foundation supported the Capital Campaign and helped us get into our new building. It is a tribute to their vision and understanding that they continue to provide resources to the Light house to help with operational costs to run the new facility. We are extremely grateful to them.” With the financial assistance from the Carol M. Jacobsohn Foundation the Shelter’s new facility on Hudson Street has significantly increased the Shelter’s capacity and enhance the emergency shelter, traditional housing, homeless prevention, and related support services.
