Three Recognized Experts in Genealogical Research to Lead Workshop
Maryland Historical Society - Saturday, September 10th
Baltimore, Maryland (August 4, 2011) – On Saturday, September 10th, The Maryland Historical Society, in affiliation with the Maryland Genealogical Society, will present a workshop, “Researching your Civil War Ancestors”. The program will feature three speakers on different aspects of the subject, followed by individual research assistance and document download by experts for those attendees who sign up for it. Two of the speakers have written books on Civil War ancestry and one was an advisor for the well-known Ken Burns documentary on the Civil War. The workshop runs from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm (registration starting at the 8:30 am) at the Maryland Historical Society, 201 W. Monument St. Baltimore, Maryland. A continental breakfast and lunch are included in costs.

Advance registration is $25 for MdHS and MGS members, and $40 for non-members, plus an additional $10 donation for those who sign up for individual research assistance. There is an additional $10 fee for those who do not pre-register.
“Researching your Civil War Ancestors” will help participants trace their ancestry back to the Civil War era. Listings of Civil War era soldiers will be available from Maryland Historical Society library. Guided tours of the Maryland Historical Society’s Civil War exhibition will be given to those waiting for assistance with their research. The speakers for the workshop are: Michael Hait, David Shriver Lovelace and Michael Musick.
Michael Hait is a professional genealogist, historical researcher, and freelance writer based in Washington, D.C. Mr. Hait is the author of The Civil War Draft in Maryland: Lists of Drafted Men, 1862-1865. David Shriver Lovelace studies Civil War history from a genealogical perspective in his book, The Shrivers: Under Two Flags. Mr. Lovelace’s interest in Civil War history led him to explore the family members’ involvement in the Civil War. Michael P. Musick is a former Subject Area Expert for the U.S. Civil War at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), and was an advisor for the Ken Burns’ TV series The Civil War.
The Maryland Genealogical Society (MGS) was founded in 1959 to collect and preserve Maryland history and genealogy. MGS publishes The Journal three times each year, containing excellent articles and genealogical tips; and holds workshops, luncheons and other events during the year, covering various topics of interest to genealogists. Recent event topics included land, probate and court records, plus a talk on the history of Baltimore City monuments. In addition to the upcoming workshop on researching Civil War ancestors, current plans include a seminar on little known genealogical resources in Maryland. The Maryland Historical Society was founded in 1844 and is the world’s largest museum and library dedicated to the history of Maryland.
