Annapolis Science Cafe: "Chesapeake Bay's Underwater Grasses: Life in the Shallows"
July 27th, 6 to 7:15 p.m.; 49 West Coffeehouse, Annapolis
Brooke Landry (MD DNR) will introduce you to one of the Chesapeake Bay's most vital shallow water habitats - underwater grasses. Underwater grasses, also known as bay grasses or submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), are essential to the overall health and functioning of the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem. They provide habitat for fish and invertebrates, food for waterfowl and other critters, they help stabilize our shorelines, promote good water quality, and fight climate change! We'll discuss some of the most recent research findings for Chesapeake Bay grasses and ways that you can get involved in the effort to protect, conserve, and restore them! We hope you will come in person, but zoom info is available too; if interested in zoom or other questions, email annapoliscafesci@gmail.com . You may reserve seats for this event at 49 West by calling 410-626-9796.

What's better than National Oyster Day? National Oyster WEEK, of course! That's right; EAT OYSTERS AND LOCAL SEAFOOD ALL WEEK LONG AUG. 1-6! Oysters clean Chesapeake Bay waters and provide habitat for other (delicious!) species like blue crabs, rockfish, and white perch. Did you know that eating oysters and recycling their shells leads to more oysters returned to the Bay? One reclaimed shell becomes a home for 10X as many babies! Oyster Recovery Partnership, the nonprofit expert in Chesapeake Bay oyster restoration, relies on Shell Recycling Alliance restaurants to provide shell critical for oyster restoration efforts.
