
2023 DEIA in the Arts Conference

This 2nd Annual Conference will bring together a wide array of speakers, artists, community members, and arts professionals for a day of learning, discussion, and networking about diversity, equality, inclusion, and accessibility in the arts. Topical presentations, panel discussions, and interactive sessions will provide attendees with tools they need to reach underserved populations, build partnerships, engage broader audiences, and build diversity in their staff, boards, and volunteer base.

One of the highlights of the event for the past 30 years, the Crab Soup Cook-off, will be back with our local celebrity judges, people’s choice contest, and over 20 different soups to taste. The Beer and Oyster tent, always a hit, will include oysters from local fisheries and a great place to take in some pre-season NFL games. Chef demonstrations will exhibit how to make scrumptious dishes – including best practices on handling invasive species. A portion of the proceeds benefit local charities.The Maryland Seafood Festival is a family friendly event, fun for all ages. Spend a couple of hours with us or the entire day. Teen Scene: Field Research as a Career and Hands-On Science
August 19th, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, Edgewater
Teens often get asked what they want to be when they get older, and it’s often hard to know without trying things out. In this session, we’ll talk about careers in biological field sciences, and what we do at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. Afterward, participants will get to put on chest waders and go into the water to sample fish biodiversity and visit the dock to look at oyster reef organisms and learn how our scientists sample biodiversity.

The 17th Annual CRAB Cup will be held at the Eastport Yacht Club in Annapolis, MD, on August 19, 2023. The CRAB Cup is the largest fundraiser of the year for Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating. Kicking off at noon, more than 90 sailboats participate in a family-friendly, competitive pursuit race to determine who will be the champion of the day. If you are not a sailor but enjoy a day of friendly competition, you can still join in the fun! There is a Poker Pursuit Race for Powerboats and The Skippers Challenge, an online peer-to-peer fundraising competition with great prizes. Proceeds make it possible for CRAB to offer its sailing and boating programs for people with disabilities, recovering warriors, and children from underserved communities at no charge.
