Q: I’ve been told I have a cataract. Now what?
A: Cataracts are removed surgically and an intraocular lens placed to restore vision. Cataract surgery is elective. The decision about when a cataract is ready for surgery is when you believe your sight has failed to the point that you are having difficulty reading print, driving, or performing activities of daily living. An ethical surgeon will not force you into surgery. Patients should also be aware that there are new intraocular lenses available that not only provide single vision correction but also correct astigmatism and presbyopia. You should discuss these options when you talk with your ophthalmologist about cataract surgery.
