The Proposal
College sweethearts from the University of Delaware, Megan and Brian’s romance turned to wedding planning after a romantic proposal in Central Park, New York City. After the proposal, Brian arranged for their families to meet them for dinner and the cele ate the long awaited proposal. Their trip was complete with a stay at the Waldorf Astoria hotel.
The Planning Process
Megan recalls that planning the wedding “was not too stressful to us because we took our time. We really wanted to add personal touches anywhere we could so it was fun thinking of new creative ideas along the way.”
The Venue
“Selecting a venue was probably most exciting,” Megan remembers when thinking about planning their wedding. “It sets the tone of your wedding and gets the ball rolling. We waited three months after our engagement to start that process. It allowed us to enjoy the engagement and not rush into the planning.” Osprey Point Inn was perfect for the couple. They knew they wanted an outdoor wedding and traditional Chesapeake Bay feel to their ceremony and reception without having to pick multiple locations. “We wanted a private place we could call home for the wedding weekend.”
The Walk Down the Aisle
Brian being very traditional, refused to do a first look. They agreed that they wanted the first time they saw each other to be when Megan walked down the aisle. “We were both in tears and really enjoyed that moment.” They do want couples to understand that not having a first look means you sacrifice cocktail hour with your guests and photos are rushed. “Not having a first look worked out for us because everything was on site and we had great photographers and coordinators, but each couple has to choose for themselves!”
The Fisherman's Knot
Being on the water where the eeze can pick up, the couple opted out of using a candle or sand during their ceremony. Instead, they had their mothers tie a fisherman’s knot with rope. It is a symbol of growing stronger under pressure.
The Dessert
Neither Megan nor Brian particularly like cake and they knew much of it would go to waste. Instead of a wedding cake, they served two flavors of gelato from Café Gelato in Newark, Delaware. Megan’s mother gave them engraved ice cream scoops for a twist on the traditional cake knife.
The Decor
The couple wanted a polished nautical theme for the wedding so they incorporated maps and map coordinates throughout their paper goods. They also used wood and ass elements alongside a navy, white, and gold color scheme.
The Bridal Party
Eight idesmaids and eight groomsmen, the couple chose a nontraditional way of introducing them to their guests. They were introduced in groups versus pairs based on how they knew the couple. So family was introduced together, followed by grade school and then college.
The Best Decisions
“Committing to an outdoor wedding is high risk,” Megan admits. “But if the weather is decent, it’s an amazing setting for you and your guests!
We were so happy we went with a beautiful sailcloth tent for our outdoor wedding. It really tied everything together. And, of course, we have no regrets about the 10-piece band!”
