Internationally respected saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk brings the Jazz Update band to 49 West in Annapolis Friday Oct. 11 for shows at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. They’ll present the kind of compelling originals and beautifully executed standards that have brought them praise from critics near and far.br
Says Doug Morrissey or MusikReviews.com, “Jeff Antoniuk and the Jazz Update have proven themselves to be a quartet to be reckoned with.” Dave Wayne of JazzReview.com said of their last album, “Brotherhood stands as a boldly affirmative statement regarding the health and well being of modern jazz in the early 21st century.” Find loads of reviews, interviews and music on the website: http://www.jeffantoniuk.com.
Based in Washington, D.C., the Jazz Update performs only occasionally in Maryland’s capital city. In this special performance, the Jazz Update will perform both standards and original compositions prolific bandleader, Jeff Antoniuk. An award winning composer, Antoniuk has earned accolades for compositions found on his last two albums with the Update (Here Today in 2007 and Brotherhood in 2010). In the past year, many more tunes have been penned, and Antoniuk is beginning to preview and ripen them in advance of upcoming albums.
Among the originals that the group is likely to play is “Generator.” The energetic up-tempo song is dedicated to Home Depot, hurricanes, and ice storms and written in the style of Wayne Shorter’s compositions for the Miles Davis Quintet. The Update will also perform “Balancing,” a happy but tricky tune about finding balance in life and music.
The band is well equipped to handle this complexity. All are university jazz professors inging deep knowledge and peerless technical skills to performance of jazz. They include bassist Tom Baldwin, drummer Tony Martucci and pianist Wade Beach.
Located at 49 West Street in Historic Annapolis, 49 West offers shows at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. The cover charge is $15. Make reservations by phone only by calling 410-626-9796.
